Post performance q&a with Nina Haft and Claudia Borgna Sunday October 3 6:00pm DEBRIS/FLOWS is an evening-length dance performance and craft installation about landscape, rubbish and our attempts to control nature. This new work by Nina Haft & Co. builds on Haft's ten years of performances about place. DEBRIS/FLOWS draws inspiration from rocks, fungi, systems theory, road-kill, mudslides, oil spills, Little Red Riding Hood and other nature tales, to explore the wilderness inside us. This dance and performance installation transforms an open plan warehouse space into an inviting labyrinth of seed swapping and vegetable planting stations; refreshment tables prepared with foods from local community gardens; audio kiosks that evoke far flung landscape; an original sculpture installation made from recycled plastic bags; and other interactive elements. This new work builds on Haft's ten years of performances about place, and takes place October 1-3, 2010 at Zaccho Dance Theatre in the Bayview Hunters' Point district of San Francisco. Artistic Director NINA HAFT's work has been profiled in Dance Magazine and supported by the Djerassi Resident Artist Program, Margaret Jenkins' CHIME (Choreographers in Mentorship Exchange), Shawl-Anderson Dance Center, the University of Wisconsin, Purdue University, CSU East Bay, the Clorox Company Foundation, Zellerbach Family Foundation, Theatre Bay Area, W.A. Gerbode Foundation, the City of Oakland, the City of Berkeley, the Alameda County Art Commission, the California Arts Council, and generous individuals. NH&Co. is also known for the Dance in Unexpected Places Series, presenting performances in dockyards, circus tents, synagogues, parking lots, libraries, train stations, pubs, and the historic Mountain View Cemetery. NH&Co. has performed throughout California at venues such as West Wave Dance Festival, ODC, Dance Up Close/East Bay, SUSHI, the Electric Lodge and others. Her work has been presented nationally in Boston, Chicago, Madison, Minneapolis, New York City, Portland, Santa Cruz and San Diego. In celebration of ten years of dance and community, NH&Co. completed its first international tour in 2010, with performances and teaching engagements in Jordan, Palestine and Israel.
Nina is on faculty at CSU East Bay in the Dept. of Theatre and Dance, and at Shawl-Anderson Dance Center, where NH&Co. is a company in residence. Back to top claudia borgnaClaudia was born in Hamburg, Germany, and raised in Italy. After graduating from Genoa University in foreign literature, she moved to London, where she has been living for the past 15 years. Claudia has attended several art courses, both practical and theoretical, which have allowed her to experiment with various disciplines, media and techniques, including ceramics, life drawing and painting, sculpture and printmaking. This led to her completion in 2005 of a second degree in Fine Art at the London Metropolitan University. Since then Claudia has been exhibiting in shows in London, around the UK, Berlin, Europe, Mexico and the USA and she has attended fellowship residencies in the USA, Canada and Europe.She is the recipient of both the Joan Mitchell and the Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner Grant and was awarded the Royal British Society of Sculptors Bursary Award as well as the Pritzker Foundation Endowed Fellowship Award. She also was short-listed for the BBC2 documentary: "School of Saatchi" and was recently selected for the Broomhill National Sculpture Prize 2010. Her work entails the investigation of what she calls the "evolution of landscape", a process started and affected by modern life-styles and consumerism. Her installations are the materialization of an ongoing observation and questioning of how the "plastic" and the natural realms interact with one another and thereby come to create new ephemeral orders.
